About Christian Culture Festival

Christian Culture Festival was organized for the first time in 1997 on 10th Anniversary of the Logos Theatre. In a sense, it extends the idea of Christian Culture Weeks organized in Poland in 70s and 80s of the last century, which were to become counterpoise to lay media model promoted by the State. Lodz Christian Culture Days were organized in churches all around the city, so as to accommodate the artists, spectacles, exhibitions and projections.

One of such places was the John Paul lecture theatre in the vault of the Assumption of Holy Mother Church in Kościelna Street. This is where the Logos Theatre started, before it was moved to the church in Maria Skłodowska-Curie. It was this church that Archbishop Władysław Ziółek gave to the Lodz artists in 1993, and in which the Centre of Creative Communities’ of Lodz Archdiocese was appointed. It is here that the ‘logistic’ centre of the Festival is located, and where some of the Festival events take place.

Traditionally, the Festival takes place in November, on the first Sunday after All Soul’s Day. It usually lasts for two weeks, during which various event take place – spectacle premiers, other theatres come to Lodz, there are exhibitions of invited artists, performances of choirs and musicians, very often not to be seen anywhere else in Poland at any other time. The Festival programme is the result of the whole year’s work of rev. Waldemar Sondka, the Festival Director, who – using his contacts – invites artists who are interesting, out of the ordinary, noteworthy and creating art perhaps not always religious, but always searching and at the highest level. Care for the level of the Festival offers is a permanent rule, the Logos environment has always wished to provide the Lodz citizens with the possibility of contact with art deprived of parochialism, open to the man and as perfect formally as possible.

The Festival is not an activity that brings profit. Any entrance cards are issued as invitations that are free of charge, and the team of the Logos Theatre and all the people engaged in the Festival organization, act as volunteers. This does not mean that Christian Culture Festival costs nothing. On the contrary, to organize such a cultural event at appropriate level is always connected with costs. Rev. Waldemar Sondka deals with organizing means to secure the Festival events all year round. He manages to gain sponsors (without whom the Festival would not exist) and subsidies from institutions that deal with funding culture (without which the Festival could not develop). All that in order to realize the basic idea of the event that derived from the Lodz Christian Culture Days – to enable anyone who wishes and needs that, to live the Mystery through art. This idea assumes a free of charge participation in all the artistic events, which has been the case since the very beginning of the Festival until today, the only condition is that on the day of the Festival opening, one must queue as long as it takes to get invitations. The only limit to the number of invitations is the capacity of rooms in which the events are organized every day throughout the two weeks of the Festival.

This is an evening of Authentic American gospel music with accomplished professionals from the United States and South Africa. It is a celebration of the gospel art form as experiended in today's Black churches across America as well as some modern churches in South Africa. Gospel Power Soul includes the rich lyrical and pure vocal stylings of Lerato Sebele (So. Africa — 3 years as Rafiki in "Der König der Löwen"), the phenomenal vocal presence of Love Newkirk (Pennsylvania — Lead roll in the celebrated best musical on tour in Germany "Sister Soul"), the dynamic vocal versatility of Ingrid Arthur (Atlanta, Georgia — solo singer of the duo "The Weather Girls"), the smooth melodic voicings of Timothy Riley (Brooklyn, NY — Singer & Actor of "Hope: The Musical" and Member of the Grammy Award winning Gospel choir "The Love Fellowship Church Choir") and the incomparable and skillful playing and unique vocal artistry of Randall Hutchins (Brooklyn, NY — Arranger, Singer, and Pianist for Popular Gospel Artist Ron Kenoly and Composer/Playwright of "Hope: The Musical"). The combination of artists is simply incredible!
When these five powerful talents come together, they possess a sound that will leave the audience totally uplifted and wanting much more. Feel the emotion of Gospel music as these God-believing performers bring a new level to the meaning "the good news".

Timothy Riley

Timothy Riley was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He first took an interest in music at the age of 3. His grandmother saw that he had a gift for music, particularly singing, and decided to put him into the children’s choir, at church. There, being the Children’s choir director, she would go on to play an intricate role nurturing and developing his talent through the years. By the time Timothy was 18 years old, he had already studied music quite extensively in Vocal/Choral Jazz and Classical genres. He even began teaching himself to play piano. He had also learned several languages, among them being Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin with working knowledge of Hebrew and German.

In 1994 Timothy went on to study music majoring in Vocal Performance and Music Education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. In 1999, with the support of his mother and grandmother, Timothy moved to New York City to pursue his music career in a more avid way. He already had several years as a professional singer under his belt but was still looking to excel. Shortly upon arriving, he became a teacher for the world reknown “Boys Choir of Harlem”. In the fall of 1999, Timothy was accepted into the world famous Grammy award winning gospel choir, “The Love Fellowship Crusade Choir” under the direction of Dr. Hezekiah Walker, now his Pastor. The choir would later go on to win another Grammy in 2001 for the album “Love is Live”.

In 2000, Timothy began touring in Europe with Musical Director, friend, and colleague, Gregory Kelly, (songwriter and musician for Hezekiah Walker), with the European gospel group, “The Black Gospel Singers”. Timothy was the assistant musical director for 3 years in this group. In 2004, Timothy joined the European touring group “The Very Best of Black Gospel” and is currently touring under this company. In 2005, Timothy wanted to take a hiatus from New York and wanted to learn more about European culture. So he moved to Germany. There he founded the Leviticus Gospel Choir in Hamburg, Germany with the help of friend and gospel innovator, Brigitte Haack.

Timothy’s experience, intellect, and music ability has allowed him to travel abroad as well as share stages with Gospel greats such as Hezekiah Walker, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, Shirley Caesar, Donnie McClurkin, Yolanda Adams, Kim Burrell, John P. Kee, Donald Lawrence, soul artists such as Michael Bolton, Lou Rawls, Freddie Jackson, as well as television appearances with actor/comedian, Martin Short, on David Letterman (USA), Bobby Jones Gospel (USA), Thomas Gottschalk’s Grosse Bibel Test (Germany), Der Deutscher Filmpreis with actor/comedian “Bully” (Germany) and countless others.

Timothy is the director of Gospel Power Soul and founded the group in April of 2008.
