About Christian Culture Festival

Christian Culture Festival was organized for the first time in 1997 on 10th Anniversary of the Logos Theatre. In a sense, it extends the idea of Christian Culture Weeks organized in Poland in 70s and 80s of the last century, which were to become counterpoise to lay media model promoted by the State. Lodz Christian Culture Days were organized in churches all around the city, so as to accommodate the artists, spectacles, exhibitions and projections.

One of such places was the John Paul lecture theatre in the vault of the Assumption of Holy Mother Church in Kościelna Street. This is where the Logos Theatre started, before it was moved to the church in Maria Skłodowska-Curie. It was this church that Archbishop Władysław Ziółek gave to the Lodz artists in 1993, and in which the Centre of Creative Communities’ of Lodz Archdiocese was appointed. It is here that the ‘logistic’ centre of the Festival is located, and where some of the Festival events take place.

Traditionally, the Festival takes place in November, on the first Sunday after All Soul’s Day. It usually lasts for two weeks, during which various event take place – spectacle premiers, other theatres come to Lodz, there are exhibitions of invited artists, performances of choirs and musicians, very often not to be seen anywhere else in Poland at any other time. The Festival programme is the result of the whole year’s work of rev. Waldemar Sondka, the Festival Director, who – using his contacts – invites artists who are interesting, out of the ordinary, noteworthy and creating art perhaps not always religious, but always searching and at the highest level. Care for the level of the Festival offers is a permanent rule, the Logos environment has always wished to provide the Lodz citizens with the possibility of contact with art deprived of parochialism, open to the man and as perfect formally as possible.

The Festival is not an activity that brings profit. Any entrance cards are issued as invitations that are free of charge, and the team of the Logos Theatre and all the people engaged in the Festival organization, act as volunteers. This does not mean that Christian Culture Festival costs nothing. On the contrary, to organize such a cultural event at appropriate level is always connected with costs. Rev. Waldemar Sondka deals with organizing means to secure the Festival events all year round. He manages to gain sponsors (without whom the Festival would not exist) and subsidies from institutions that deal with funding culture (without which the Festival could not develop). All that in order to realize the basic idea of the event that derived from the Lodz Christian Culture Days – to enable anyone who wishes and needs that, to live the Mystery through art. This idea assumes a free of charge participation in all the artistic events, which has been the case since the very beginning of the Festival until today, the only condition is that on the day of the Festival opening, one must queue as long as it takes to get invitations. The only limit to the number of invitations is the capacity of rooms in which the events are organized every day throughout the two weeks of the Festival.

Polish reggae band set up in 1997 by Darek ‘Maleo’ Malejonek. Their first CD recording Za Zu Zi, with contributions from Piotr ‘Stopa’ Żyżelewicz, Joszko Broda, Marcin Pospieszalski, Tomek ‘Siwy’ Wójcik and Tomek Bielecki, was released in February1998 and was filled with reggae with some folk additives. The recording provided Maleo with an opportunity to return to the roots — the music he had always listened to and played. Industry press published opinions much in favour of the CD, which gave a stimulus to establish a concert-giving ensemble based upon the legendary reggae group BAKSHISH. Such was the beginning of MALEO REGGAE ROCKERS, the ensemble that has until today given over a hundred concerts all over Poland. The well-known director Mika Kaurismaki in his movie L.A. without a map used two MRR compositions: Colors and ZaZuZi Dub. The movie’s European premiere show took place at the Warsaw Film Festival in October 1998 and was attended by Mr. Kaurismaki.

June 2001 saw MRR tour Poland for six days with Michael Black, the Jamaican reggae star. They gave their fascinating concerts in Warsaw, Opole, Ostrów-Wielkopolski, Wrocław and Toruń (at the famous Song of Songs Festival). In summer 2002, the band toured the country again: the REGGAE TOUR 2002 consisted of eighteen concert appearances, featuring Kofi Ayivora, the singer with the legendary OSYBISA group, and the Jamaican Michael Black again.

In July 2003, a CD titled Maleo Reggae Rockers & Michael Black Live 2002 was published by the Polish Radio, featuring a recording of the tour’s last concert — the one given at Przystanek Woodstock 2002 festival as well as a concert recorded at the ‘A. Osiecka’ Polish Radio Studio.

MRR appeared at World Youth Days in Cologne and Bonn in 2005, and in the U.S. — as Maleo Reegae Rockers — Taste of Polonia, Chicago 2007 & 2009.

Eight years past the release of their first studio-recorded CD, the band published their new record Reggaemova, in 2006. The fresh sound of this music offers primarily modern sounds referring to Jamaican as well as international reggae music classics. The difference is clearly audible in the way sound is produced, and the excellently arranged wind section is admirable. The listener’s attention is drawn to brilliant guitar solos by Siwy, as e.g. in the piece called Zion. The contributors were Michael Black, King Lover, Reggaenerator, Vienio & Pele rap duo and the Positive Ferment Sound System (with participation of the late Tyleriano of Pozytywny Ferment, who died a tragic death). MRR was the first Polish reggae band to take part in a ‘Lato z Radiem 2008’ — a Polish Radio Channel 1 summer concert tour, to promote at some twenty concerts pieces from their album Reggaemova and the forthcoming CD Addis Abeba.

Summer 2009 saw release of MRR’s third CD Addis Abeba. In the Amharic language, the name means ‘New Flower’ — as so is the record: something that has flourished, gaining variegated colours and strength, to finally explode with an entirely new quality. The work on the album lasted for almost three years. When a considerable portion of the material was already recorded, a novelty occurred: in late 2008, Maleo went to Africa and travelled across it for a month. His sightseeing and other experiences there offered him an entirely new view on the world. The experience as a whole imbued his music with a new quality, prevalently informing its textual layer and altering the rhythm in which the record was being produced. Eastwest Rockers and Michael Black made their guest appearances. The band Eastwest Rockers perfectly sensed the ambience of the song Reggae Radio, giving it an appropriate colouring; Michael Black, with whom MRR had the pleasure to cooperate before then, proved to be a perfect cast with Put Your Guns Down. The CD was nominated for a Fryderyk 2010 prize. The RMF Reggae Music City portal chose in 2010 MRR as their Band of the Year. Addis Abeba was named the Album of the Year for reggae music. 2010 took the band to Slovakia to give concerts there, the other venues being Rototom in Spain and Przystanek Woodstock, at which large festivals MRR presented its reggae covers featuring Ghetto Priest, among others.

The band presently gives concerts and prepares their new record in parallel.
